This fully assembled (simply attach the flywheel with a set screw) combination solar and low temperature differential stirling engine is a great way to introduce students to stirling engine construction and design. This stirling engine is constructed of fully CNC machined aluminum alloy parts, with the exception of a clear acrylic top plate to allow sunlight to enter the base. This combination stirling can be used as a solar driven or low temperature differential device. To power it with solar energy, place the engine in direct sunlight for a few minutes and then give it a gentle spin in the proper direction. Students can watch it turn perpetually using only the energy from the sun. This engine can also be used as a low temperature differential device by placing one of the included gel packs in the microwave and putting the engine on top of it. Wait for a few minutes while the heat is absorbed into the base plate and then give the engine a gentle spin and watch it perpetually turn, speeding up as more of the heat from the pack is absorbed through the base plate. Alternatively the gel pack can be cooled to make the engine spin in the opposite direction. For a fun twist, try placing it on top of a coffee cup filled with hot liquid. The small footprint of this engine makes it ideal for situations where space is limited.
